It was a cold sports hall that greeted us in rural Perthshire, but things soon began to warm, simmer and come to the boil at the Scottish Schools Team Championships. Fencers coached by Salle Ossian were here to represent their schools in an over 15 and under 15 category. Each team fenced another 5 schools in the preliminary rounds, then seeded for direct elimination bouts to the final. In the under 15 championships, Breadalbane Academy won the gold medal match, putting out Perth High School in a nail-biting finale. In the over 15 event, Strathallan School showed good depth in their team not to drop a match all day and to take the gold medal. But a big mention for Breadalbane Academy, a team of beginners, who went on to take home the bronze medal. All of the coaches and staff at Salle Ossian send their warmest congratulations.
It was a great weekend for Salle Ossian in Dundee with a lots of real improvement in everyone’s fencing.
First up, Ronnie, aged just 8, took silver in the mixed under 10. Kayleigh took bronze, but had obviously made a dash back to Aberfeldy before the medal ceremony!
Next up we had the boys under 12 event. Rory continues his 100% success rate in this category, but was joined on the podium by young Alex in his first ever competition and what better way to start his competitive career by taking silver.
The weekend continued in a very strong event in which Sam and Toby battled through to meet each other in the final. Sam won on this occasion, but these two lads are pushing each other hard and improving by the week.
And not to be out-done by the boys, the girls also had a very good event, taking joint 3rd and with Elsie being the eventual winner.
Lastly, a special mention for Ethan who while still a novice, has now taken two third places in the YDS series. That’s great work especially when the under 17 event has some very strong and experienced fencers in it.
Well done everyone. Next YDS event is in April at Strathallan School. See you all there.
