Sabres have been rattling furiously throughout Perthshire as Salle Ossian Fencing Club has been preparing to send fencers to represent Scotland at the UK School Games in Manchester. Kate Daykin, Jess Corby and Sarah-Jane Hampson who all train at the Perth club were selected to represent Scotland.
This is the 9th UK School Games involving over 1600 athletes who get to come together to experience a multi-sport event, stay in the athletes village and compete for their country. It’s a wonderful initiative and helps prepare youngsters with aspirations to compete at the Commonwealth Games and Olympics.
In the fencing, Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales compete in individual and team events. Scotland has never won the team sabre before, but this year, the Salle Ossian girls did wonderfully with a clean sweep of the medals in the individual event and going on to win team gold in a nail biting final against England. Kate Daykin is this year’s UK School Games Champion, with Jess Corby taking silver and Sarah-Jane Hampson takes the bronze. Together, they ensured Scotland are this year’s UK School Games sabre champions.
And it gets better. In a week of good news, Kate and Jess have both been selected for the senior Commonwealth Fencing Championships to be held at the national sport centre in Largs in November this year.
Salle Ossian Fencing Club runs beginners classes throughout the year in and around Perth. If you have a budding young athlete in the family, you might want to consider fencing, one of the fastest and safest of the Olympic sports and one that boys and girls can train and compete together in. For many of you starting out on your fencing career you’ll be looking forward to competing with others. You will have to become a member of Scottish Fencing, but remember, we can supply all the kit you need for the event you are going to.

Kate Daykin and Jess Corby are well on their way to securing places on the GB U20 and U17 squads. At the weekend they both made the final tableau of the London u20 qualifier. Kate was narrowly nudged out 14-15 by the eventual winner. Jess also went out 14-15 after a valiant fight back from 9-14 down, but well done on her bronze medal! That should put both of them in a strong position for selection to the international qualification events coming up in France and Poland. We wish them all the best as they train for their goal of making selection to the GB Youth Team for the World and European Championships early in 2015.
We’re working hard to secure the first dedicated training centre for fencing in Scotland when we hope to open 7 days a week. In the meantime, here is our scheduled class list. Don’t forget that as a member of Salle Ossian you are welcome to come to any of the sessions at all our venues.
