Very well done to Jess Corby in her first international event of the year at the European Sabre qualifier in Meylan, France. After a shaky start in the poules, Jess was ranked 58th out of 104 young women from around Europe with strong teams in particular from France and Germany. She won her first direct elimination fight comfortably to progress into the last 64 and this seemed to settle her for her next fight against the number 11 seed. At 5-8 down at the break there was plenty of work to do. But she out thought and out fenced her opponent to win 15-13. In the last 32 Jess beat one of her GB team mates and moved into the last 16. She lost 14-15 against the eventual bronze medallist, but has come away from the event knowing that all her hard work has earned her the right to feel confident about her ability to compete at this level. So a good start towards selection on to the GB squad for the European and World Championships in 2015.
