Mark Alvares won the under 17 British ranking event at the weekend at the Newcastle Fencing Centre.
Mark didn’t drop a fight all day, including his L16 fight against team mate Rory McLellan. Rory, still only 13, put in a strong performance and can be pleased with his result. Also making it on to the final tableau of 8 was 14 year old Sam Freeman – a career best performance for him.
But it was Mark who pushed through to he final which he won 15-13 against GB team mate Alex LeMaitre.
This result will put him in a strong position for the 2017-18 season as Mark has another year to go at cadet level.
For the first time in the history of the Championships, a Scottish club has won the British Teams for a second year in a row.
Salle Ossian were missing club mate and British no.1 Jess Corby who was on GB international duty, so stepping up to the plate was Kate Daykin, SJ Hampson and newcomer to the team, Lucy Higham.
Salle Ossian won all their preliminary matches, including against the much fancied Camden team and progressed to the knock-out stages as no.1 seed. They maintained their composure through to the final winning 45-41.
Well done ladies! A great result for Salle Ossian and for fencing in Scotland.
