Rory Wins In Barcelona

Rory McLellan has won the Trofeu Sant Jordi, one of the largest competitions on the u14 international circuit.  On Saturday he was faultless with a 6-0 win-loss in the first round of poules and a 6-0 in the seeding round, meaning he went in to the direct elimination round on Sunday seeded no.2.

He got a bye in to the Last 32 round which he won with an impressive 15-6. His dominance continued into the semi final with wins of 15-11 and 15-9. However his semi final fight looked in jepordy as he went 6-8 down and took a blow to his fencing hand causing considerable pain and swelling. He opted to continue and won in courageous style as he did in the final, dominating in a 15-9 win.

Many congratulations to Kate Daykin continuing her terrific form in 2017 by winning the Glasgow Open.  She won 10 preliminary bouts and all her direct elimination bouts, culminating in a tense and dramatic 15-13 win over club-mate SJ Hampson.  In third place, Lucy Higham demonstrated how much progress she has made in the last 6 months.   In the senior men’s event, 14 yr old Sam Freeman surprised everyone by winning the bronze medal, with Ewan Robertson making it in the the last 8 by beating team mate Paul Vaughan 15-13 in the last 16 round.

Despite a busy academic programme at Herriot Watt University, Kate is now ranking no.2 on the Great Britain national rankings and is currently the top ranked GB fencer in the world.
