Focus on Kate

Kate is 22 years old, from Dalgety Bay in Scotland and has been fencing since she was seven. She has won multiple Scottish, British and Commonwealth Championships and is the current British University and British U23 Champion and a regular member of the Scottish and GB Teams.

Having now completed her degree at Heriot Watt University, she decided to train full time, aiming towards the 2024 Olympics. She is also working as a community coach, delivering health and fitness sessions in schools and to community groups with special needs.

It’s a huge commitment for Kate and family.  For example, in the last few months of the season she will be competing at the European U23 Championships in Plovidiv, the Senior European Championships in Dusseldorf and the World University Games in Naples. She has also been selected for the senior World Championships in Budapest, the first Scottish woman for over 20 years!

Despite her success, what you may not know, is that for an aspiring athlete like Kate, there is no national funding. She has to cover not only my own costs, but also those of my coach and any officials who have to travel with me to these events.  As well as support from her family and her club, Kate has to raise £5,000 each year to cover the cost of competing and representing Scotland and GB.

Kate is typical of the talent and determination we strive for at Salle Ossian.  If you’d like to support our club efforts, please get in touch.
